This game against Nottingham Trent would see ULRLFC go on a four game win streak; something the club has not done in a long time but over the past two years has seemed more and more obtainable. Therefore the pressure was on to seal a good win away from home. From the start it was clear that it would be a tough game as Trent had put several first team players into the squad, as reputation of ULRLFC has increased over the season. The first half an hour was very cagey with both sides failing to score, and both team’s defenses looked strong in what was a very physical game. However an inspired kick from Ryan Morgan that looped high into the air allowing an unusually lively Hary Manoharan to compete and catch the ball and play a good pass off to Nik White who competently finished off the move, scoring the first try of the game. Now in the lead ULRLFC looked to continue with sustained pressure but Nottingham Trent showed good determination and applied most of the pressure for the remainder of the half and scored to leave the score level at 4-4. It may have been more if not for the tactical nous of Mark Shale’s whose slowing of the play although costing him a yellow card allowed for defensive numbers to sufficiently get back and stop a break Trent had made. This left the score at 4-4 at the close of the half.
The aim for the start of the second half was clear and this was to start strong and most importantly improve line speed which was lacking in the first half and hopefully the rest would follow. ULRLFC did not disappoint and line speed was markedly quicker, which had the desired knock on affect of pushing Trent back and under pressure. With this stronger defense errors were forced upon Trent and as hoped good defense was able to lay a solid platform for attack. Midway through the second half it was Ryan Morgan again who was to provide the spark and a trademark sidestepping master class allowing him to go over for the second try. Yet the game was still finely balanced and a few times Trent found themselves deep within ULRLFC’s half, but superb and gritty defending denied them from scoring. The game was put to bed when Ryan Morgan scored his second try of the game, this time finding the try line with strong sharp running. The final score was 16 – 4 to ULRLFC. An indication to the physicality of the game was seen in the stat sheet showing an outstanding 52 tackles from Captain James Dolan, who led by example for a second half defensive performance that was arguably the best this season, with others making many tackles also such as Josh Hull with 40 plus. Man of the match performances from both James Dolan and Ryan Morgan helped secure a deserved fourth win of the season, with now aspirations of a top 3 place very attainable.THE TEAM
