Match Report
Written by Alex Willet
The first game of the season saw ULRLFC travel to Derby to face a newcomer to the Midlands league. Little was known of what to expect of this new team and alongside this fact it was also the first game of the season and important that we concentrate on our own performance and play good solid rugby league. This began as planned as our notoriously hard hitting defense looked solid as ever and laid the foundations for some early chances and possession in the oppositions half. However as the game continued it was Derby who took the most out of their opportunities scoring the first try of the game. This being a slight shock unfortunately caused the team to lose concentration slightly paving the way for another score shortly after the first for Derby. The first half continued with solid defenses and stuttering attacks. This was until after a sustained period within the Derby half, a good show of flowing rugby saw Leicester score a well worked try on the right hand side of the pitch, finished off by the winger Olamide Ola-said. A good conversion by Rob Martin meant that at the close of the first half the score was finely balanced at 10-6.
The second half began and uncharacteristic mistakes including knock-on’s and soft penalties gave Derby much of the possession and pressure, which they capitalised on, extending their lead further with several converted tries. A certain few dubious decisions from the referee going Derby’s way also meant that the momentum continued for most of the second half and Leicester unable to score a try in the second half, led to the score being 21-6 at the close. Despite the loss many positives could be taken away from the game. Will Hale in his first game for the club put in a man of the match performance at full back, with persistently exceptional catching and returning. On top of this Alex Morrisey showed and animal like instinct in defence, alongside Josh Hull who’s combined attack and defence although slightly dirty at times was very strong. The team as a whole showed commitment as always throughout and now nothing but positive thoughts and minds are ready to play the anticipated first home game next Wednesday.
