Match Report
Written by Alex Willet

The second game of the season saw Coventry, recently coming down from the midlands 1 league, come to Leicester. A confident and bright start from ULRLFC gave prolonged pressure within the Coventry half. It took a smart grubber kick from Rob Martin and a touch of luck to allow Ryan Morgan to successfully chase the kick and score the first try of the match for ULRLFC. However after starting well Coventry worked their way back into the game with strong running and continuous completed sets. From this they were able to take the lead due to an uncharacteristically sloppy ULRLFC defense. At the close of the first half Coventry led by a few tries and ULRLFC needed to start the second half the same way they started the first.

Unfortunately this was not to be and the start of the second half both sides fought hard for possession and were dogged in defense. The possible highlight of the match came when a kick from Coventry deep in Leicester’s half was caught by Alex Willett and a sharp injection of pace saw him break the line and into open field. However unable to score, Leicester now had a strong position in the opponents half which they made the most of as fluent attacking play meant that new boy Tom Fletcher was able to run a incisive line straight though the defense and score his first of hopefully many tries for the club. Nevertheless Coventry proved too strong and increased their lead to give them the win. Another excellent performance from Alex Morrissey who led from the front made him a worthy man of the match (I’m sure Georgi would be proud!).

Overall it was a much improved performance, especially attackingly, as increased communication and confidence paved the way for flowing rugby. A repeat of this form with an added increase in intensity in defense should mean that a first win away at Birmingham is more than possible.
